One thing that doesn’t enter your mind when you dream about something great like this coast to coast trip, is the negative, the scary, the downside.
However, once your committed (house sold, end of contract in sight, wife with a new contract pending in CO), the other thoughts, feelings started to rise. You know what I mean….
What if I’m hit by a truck? What if I can’t find a job when I’m done? What if all our planning doesn’t work out and we’re HOMELESS?!! Can you hear the music? Dum dum dum!!!! Aghhhh!!!!!!!
When your mind starts to stray you need to step back and take an objective look at your fears. Let’s face it. Fear is good. Heck, it’s what saved us from Snagglepuss back in the day. But just as it can be a lifesaver it can also be a lifesapper. I know lots of people that think they’re “living life” but In truth they live in fear.
So, here’s one of my foundational beliefs:
Truth is truth – it doesn’t change and it’s true no matter where it is found.
One truth that is espoused by Christians, Jews, Hindus – heck even Tony Robbins is this:
What you expect, what your focus is on, what you put into the universe, that’s what you’ll receive. (Maybe you’ve heard it ‘As a man thinks in his heart, so is he).
So. When I started to dream -I read, I thought about, I talked about the dream, and little by little I also started to conform my steps, habits, practices into what I fixed my mind on. And things started to work out to move me in the direction of my dream. The more that happened, the more it solidified my mind on a course of action.
When fears or doubts started to press in, I found the greatest weapon against them was to focus on the goal.
If I spent time thinking of the rewards, the prize, the goal – the “dangers” seemed to shrink. Not that fears don’t have some substance, some foundation in reality, but the fears themselves are intangible and focusing on them only grows them to an unhealthy proportion, possibly becoming a limiting obstacle.
Let’s face it, any of my fears could be realized – but more than likely the truth is that the worst that will happen is that I’ll have times of boredom, rainy days, uncomfortable sleeping. But I’ll likewise will be treated to amazing views, interesting people, delicious foods, and best of all some really rewarding time with my father.
